Your Support is Needed…..

Evelyn was working on many different projects before she passed but buying land in Terrier Rouge for the local congregation was on the top of her list.  She wanted to buy land so they could build a bigger building, an orphanage and a school to help meet the many needs of the Haitians in Terrier Rouge.

The congregation currently rents this small building to worship in and as you can see, they are in need of a larger building.
Raphael Jonathan, an evangelist in Northern Haiti, helped establish the congregation in Terrier Rouge and currently holds weekly Bibles studies and preaches on Sunday mornings.

In her notes, Evelyn wrote the following:

" We do many things in Haiti…medical clinics, feed the starving, care for orphans but our overall mission is to first evangelize and then equip the saints to their fullest potential in serving in the kingdom of God! Souls and sores both need healing.  Our work depends on you and your prayers.  Please open your hearts and pocket books because spiritual work has always required material support!"

So we are asking for your help as we raise money to buy land for the Haitian Christians working in Terrier Rouge.  Our goal is to raise $15,000 US to buy land for a larger place to worship and establish an orphanage and school.

We are also raising funds for our upcoming trip, to Haiti, on November 4th where we will be conducting medical clinics in the villages surrounding Cap-Haitien.  We will need medicine, rice, beans, and Bibles at each clinic.  We would like to raise another $15,000 US for this trip to ensure we have enough funds to provide for each Haitian in need.

As Evelyn always said, "I'm an independent person but for these beautiful people who have done so much for me, I will beg!"

Be Still and Know….

In her handwritten book, Evelyn writes about the revolt of the Haitian people against their President in 1985 and all the turmoil that followed.  She writes about all the priests being thrown in jail for speaking out against the President from the pulpit and how "a silence" had fallen over the land.  She goes into much detail about the dangers during this time including burning and looting during the day and gunfire at night.  She remembers not being afraid until one night at 2 a.m. when there was heavy gun fire very close to her house.  She wrote the following, "My first reaction caused me to sit straight up in bed, then my first thought was, ‘Stupid…you lie down instead of sitting up.’  My very next thought recalled the scripture, ‘Be still and know that I am God,’ and it calmed me."

If you have watched the news or browsed Facebook, you know that our world is a mess!  People are no longer lukewarm about God, they have turned their backs on Him and are following their own lusts!  In this time of turmoil, we need to remember Psalm 46:10, "Be still, and know that I am God.  I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!" Like Evelyn, we too can be calmed by God's word in this time of turmoil.

Returning to Haiti...

Returning to Haiti after losing Granny in April of 2014, was truly difficult, not only for Lane and Tressie but for each one of the Haitians, who loved her dearly.  On March 4, 2015, Lane and Tressie  started their journey back to Haiti to conduct medical clinics at several local congregations.  Julien, Rodney, Altagrace, and Leonel met them at the airport with their driver, Ricardo.  After buying Creole Bibles, French Bibles, song books, and medicine from the pharmacy, they met back at the Mont Joli Hotel to finalize the clinical plans with the Haitian doctors, Dr. Chery and Dr. ZoPaul.
Day 1:
The first medical clinic was held in Gens de Nantes and it is our understanding that Evelyn helped with the purchase of the land which now houses a church building and a school.  The preacher, Elve Elvetus, feeds and cares for 37 orphans in Gens de Nantes.  During the clinic, 93 people including children were seen.  Rodney and Julien aided with translation, while Altagrace and Leonel worked the pharmacy.  While speaking with the preacher, Elve Elvetus, about the needs of the Church in Gens de Nantes, Lane discovered that he is in need of surgery on his hip to remove a mass that is causing him pain and weakness in his leg.   According to a team of American doctors, the mass can be removed for $1500.

Day 2:
The second medical clinic was held in the poor fishing village of Carocol where they saw 94 Haitians.  After completing the clinic, Tressie had the opportunity to play with the children.  She painted the girls nails and sang songs with all the children.  She also taught them to play hopscotch and tag; they taught her to play Hot Potato and entertained her with somersaults and a game of soccer.  Lane, Julien and Ricardo distributed 165 lbs of rice and 55 lbs of beans to the Haitians.
Day 3:
The third medical clinic was held in Terrier Rouge, after the morning worship service, where Lane was blessed to give the message with Rodney translating.  The clinic was set up in the courtyard out back and they saw 110 Haitians.  They were able to visit an elderly blind woman with diabetes and give her 150 Haitian dollars for medications they were unable to provide her at the time.  They were also able to give 500 Goud to an elderly woman who cares for her elderly uncle.  Lane has visited them in their home before and knew their situation.  Julien and Ricardo brought rice and beans for the congregation.  On their way back to the hotel, they stopped and viewed the land where a permanent clinic will be built.

Day 4:
The fourth medical clinic was held in Port Margot which is 2 hours west of Cap-Haitien.  There are about 85 members in the congregation that is led by Preacher Princivil Jackson.  The church members meet on the land where a foundation has been laid for a building.  They have constructed a small shed with a tin roof and gravel floor surrounded by bamboo.  At the clinic, 130 Haitians were treated and more medicine was purchased for parasites.  Lane gave a 96-year-old blind woman 650 Goud for food and another elderly man 600 Haitian dollars for food.

After returning to Cap-Haitien, they made a trip to the market with Altagrace to buy food to take to the hospital and prison.  They purchased 17 cases of 30 count eggs, 2 cases of spreadable cheese, and 650 buns from the local bakery.
Day 5:
Project feed the hospital and prison began with assembling bags filled with a boiled egg, a package of cheese, a bun and a banana.  A total of 563 bags of food and 504 Tampico (fruit drink) were given out between the hospital and the prison.
While at the hospital, they encountered a 3-year-old girl who had her arms, chest, and thighs burned by boiling liquid.  In Haiti, each patient is responsible for their own food, medications and supplies including the gloves for the doctor.  This little girl had been at the hospital for 3 weeks and had nothing because her mother could not afford it.  The head nurse asked for help for the little girl and provided a list of medications and supplies that were needed.  They were able to provide all that was needed and some extra money for the little girl as well as supplies for another female victim that had been burned head to toe from a propane tank explosion.
After feeding the hospital and prison, a small clinic was held at Bethseda.  Bethseda is a home that houses 12 elderly women and 3 elderly men and is overseen by Altagrace.  Each Haitian was seen by the doctors and received any maintenance medications needed.

This trip was by far the most difficult trip, emotionally speaking, that Lane has been on to Haiti.  He has been with Granny four other trips as an adult, two weeks as an eleven year old, but never where he was a large part of the decision making.  Tressie and Lane work very well together on deciding what to do next, despite their willingness to kill each other as teenagers.  They also put tremendous trust into Rodney, Julien, and Altagrace.  They went before their arrival, seeking the most need, to help direct their steps.  Mostly they trusted God.  Granny always had a saying, "Nothing's ever easy in Haiti." That is a true statement.

"God is Able"

Good morning!  I am currently working on a post about our last two trips into Haiti.  Until I get those done I thought I would leave you with some encouraging words from "Ms Evelyn" as the Haitians called Granny!

Today I cried,  for the starving, sick, homeless of Haiti.
I cried for the teenagers without education,
no vocational training who will walk the streets in despair.
I cried for mothers and fathers whose hearts
are troubled because they can't give their children a better life than they had.
I cried for the old whose children died
and now they are alone helpless and destitute.
But through tears I see faces that say
"God is Able," and I dried my tears.

Now to Him who is able to immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine,
according to His power that is at work within us

Ephesians 3:20

And so It Begins...

In 1985, Evelyn Boyd, attended a ladies dinner at Abilene Christian University (ACU) where the speaker gave a beautiful lesson titled "The Potter and Vessel". That night after careful self examination she discovered that she was living a "comfortable religion," and only doing the things that she was comfortable with, not what God required of her. She said, "I learned in presenting ourselves as a living sacrifice to the Lord we have to make some fearsome decisions!"

Evelyn made some fearsome decisions in the following months committing herself to Haiti and to what God required of her.  Pictured above are just a few of her many, many notebooks filled with detailed information about Haiti including personal thoughts, daily details of life in Haiti, Bible study notes, speaking notes, scripture, and a hand written book.  These are priceless reminders and a small glimpse into her life and work in Haiti over the past 30 years.

By Faith… is the title of this blog because it is only through God that all things are possible. In her handwritten book, Evelyn talks about the Christians that came with a mind to serve Haiti and improve the life of the Haitians despite the political demonstrations and dangers that faced them.  She poses the following question about faith, one that I feel describes the work we continue in Haiti today:
"Faith - How could it be a way of faith if one could see from the beginning to the end before undertaking a task? These brethren came and let God do something through them for the Church in Haiti.  Our lives can be a channel or a clog!

Thirty years later, by faith, her children and grandchildren are continuing the Lord's work started so long ago by our beloved Granny, Evelyn Boyd.  This blog will be our "notebooks" as we continue the journey in Haiti.  We will post trip reports, the needs of the Haitians, struggles, words of thanksgiving for our generous donors, and words of encouragement from Evelyn's notebooks.  I am currently typing up her hand written book and will leave you with some words of encouragement from Evelyn,

"When we realize we need the Lord, HE changes us.  To be a person for others has nothing  to do with convenience. It is the giving of one's self.  It  means commitment to Christ.  It has to do with decision, either to give or not to give.  Love is away of life, an attitude.  Love gives something sweet when we face difficulties.
There is tremendous power within the Christian BUT it will not be used much for the Lord until we are motivated from within."
